Why Homemade Avocado Mayo

Avocado mayo is one of my favorite condiments, because it is so versatile. We often use this healthy homemade avocado mayo as a dairy-free substitute in dips and casseroles, as well as family favorites like chicken and egg salads. While store-bought mayos are cheap and convenient, they are often made from unhealthy vegetable oils and packed with preservatives. I do love this newer store-bought brand, but still prefer to make it from scratch when I’m able, because it is so easy and delicious.

Can I Use Other Oils to Make This Recipe

I have used olive oil in this recipe as well when I ran out of avocado oil. While it produces a nice creamy mayo, I prefer the mild/neutral flavor of the avocado oil better, which tastes more similar to a store bought mayo. I do not recommend using vegetable oils in this recipe. Learn all about my other favorite pantry substitutes here – (picky eater approved!)

How Easy is it to Make Homemade Avocado Mayo

This recipe is failproof! I highly recommend an immersion blender (stick blender), as it seems to work better than a food processor or other mixing method. I make this just about weekly, as our 6 year old also requests it by the spoonful for a snack! Our local Aldi now carries organic avocado oil; it has become more easily accessible with online ordering as well.

How Long Does Avocado Mayo Last

Due to using a raw egg, I recommend using this mayo within about 5 days. Always use your own judgement. This recipe yields about 1 cup of mayo, so it is easy to use up as a dip or in a chicken, egg, or potato salad within a couple days in our home.

Is Homemade Avocado Oil Healthy

Yes! Avocado oil is a healthy fat and this mayo can be eaten on the GAPS diet, Whole30, Paleo, or just as a yummy simple recipe to make from scratch. Since salmonella can come from raw eggs, I always use eggs from a trusted local farmer who uses free-range, healthy practices.

Make this easy, healthy homemade avocado mayo—grain-free, paleo, and GAPS-approved! Perfect for a creamy, dairy-free condiment in your recipes.

Equipment

  • Mason jar
  • Immersion blender (stick blender)

Ingredients

  • 1 piece egg
  • 2 tspn lemon juice
  • 1/2 tspn salt
  • 1/2 tspn yellow mustard
  • 1 cup avocado oil

Instructions

  • Add egg, lemon juice, salt, and mustard to a wide mouth mason jar or pyrex bowl.
  • Next, use an immersion blender to blend the egg until it is white and creamy (about 1 minute or less).
  • Add the avocado oil slowly into the jar while blending. Continue blending until the avocado oil is fully mixed (about 2 minutes). It is helpful to start at the bottom of the jar and slowly bring the immersion blender up to work it in.
That's it! Simple and delicious- don't forget to lick the spoon! 🙂

Notes

Recipe Variations:
  • Add homemade ranch powder for a delicious ranch dip for veggie sticks. Our kids LOVE to dunk their carrot sticks in this dip!
  • We like to add garlic powder or fresh garlic cloves, because we like garlic on just about everything.
  • If you do not have lemons or lemon juice on hand, you can substitute with apple cider vinegar. This will create a slightly tangier mayo.
