Adrenal Cocktail Recipes
The best kept secret to more energy and better health, for me, has been healing my adrenals with better nutrition. I found a few natural remedies for adrenal fatigue while reading the book GAPS, Stage by Stage, With Recipes by Becky Plotner. While I had made other lifestyle and dietary changes, such as following the GAPS diet, getting more sleep, reducing stress, and spending more time in the morning sunlight, nothing compared to the improvement I felt after nutritionally addressing my adrenals. If you are experiencing adrenal fatigue or burnout, or want to prevent this, check out these simple adrenal cocktail recipes and Becky’s adrenal support shake below.

What is Adrenal Fatigue?
Adrenal fatigue is a condition where the adrenal glands do not function optimally by creating the right amount of adrenal hormones at the proper time of day. To learn more about the causes, symptoms, and science behind adrenal fatigue check out this post, which includes additional natural remedies to heal from this.
Symptoms of Adrenal Fatigue or Burnout
Symptoms of adrenal fatigue may include:
- Fatigue and exhaustion, despite sleeping enough
- Weight gain and inability to lose weight
- Salt and sugar cravings
- Anxiety
- Insomnia
- Dizziness
- Brain fog
- Depression
- Caffeine reliance
- Afternoon “crash” of energy
- Thyroid conditions
- Low libido
- Thinning hair
- Decreased immune function (more illness)
- Allergies, digestive issues, inflammation
Foods That Support Adrenals
The GAPS protocol has a solid success record for supporting the adrenals and one of the most effective natural remedies for adrenal fatigue. However, the greater the adrenal fatigue, the longer it can take to recover, and the more the body needs a higher concentration of nutritive support. According to Dr. Natasha Campbell-McBride MD, founder of the GAPS diet, these supports for the adrenals include cholesterol, salt, and more sleep. Good sources of cholesterol are egg yolks, animal fats, fermented kefir cream, and grass-fed butter.

Vitamins and Minerals That Support Adrenals
Vitamin C (from wholefood sources, not ascorbic acid), potassium, and sodium (from high quality sea or rock salt) are crucial for adrenal health. These 3 ingredients are the “base” for all proper adrenal cocktail recipes. Making a recipe with balanced amounts of each is very helpful for nourishing the adrenals and recovering from any ailments related to insufficient adrenal function.
Adrenal Cocktail Recipes
Many combinations of whole foods and supplements (derived from whole foods!) can be used to create an adrenal cocktail, depending what resources you have available and what your body tolerates. The main principle to remember when making an adrenal cocktail is the recipe should contain approximately:
- 375 mg potassium
- 460 mg sodium
- 60 mg wholefood vitamin C
Below are a few recipes that you can make at home.

Store-bought Adrenal Cocktail
Sourcing supplements from a trusted brand is very important. Good brands will offer high quality for the price, have third party testing, and source/mine minerals from uncontaminated sources. After trying a few different brands and much research into safety and efficacy. I have been using this adrenal cocktail from Jigsaw for several years.

Why We Need More Minerals
Many of us have made several mineral-depleting lifestyle choices throughout teenage and early adult years. These can include consuming too much caffeine, insufficient sleep, high stress, poor nutrition, drinking alcohol, using toxic hygiene and beauty products, exposure to other toxins, etc. We then often go on to have babies, which requires MANY minerals for healthy outcomes…some sources say up to 5 pounds of minerals can be depleted during pregnancy and nursing! If we are not actively restoring our body’s mineral reserves, we end up with unfavorable health outcomes.
If you want to take a deeper dive into how you can introduce more minerals into your daily menu, check out this post.
Adrenal Cocktails Vs. Adrenal Support Shake
I shared in this natural remedies for adrenal fatigue that in addition to adrenal cocktails, I often consume an adrenal support shake. This recipe is incredibly healing, and I notice a big difference in my energy levels when I am diligent about consuming it consistently. I especially focus on making sure I drink this when I am post partum, and also when I feel Hashimoto’s symptoms creeping in. (Interestingly, my Hashimoto’s has gone completely into remission with each pregnancy.) This adrenal support shake recipe was inspired by Becky Plotner, in her book Gaps Stage by Stage, With Recipes.
