Tips For Hosting Parties While Doing GAPS
A few things can make hosting easier while following a dietary protocol, such as GAPS, carnivore, whole30, paleo, etc.
- Meat quantity: a good rule of thumb is to serve ¼ pound of meat without the bone or ½ pound meat with the bone in per person invited. For example, if you are serving tacos for 12, make sure to have at least 3 pounds of taco meat. When we are following the GAPS protocol, our children definitely eat more meat than average. I cook a few extra pounds to be safe and we freeze leftovers.
- Veggies and fruit: We generally make a huge veggie and fruit platter with a variety of options. We make homemade ranch dressing for the veggies, and a caramel sauce for the fruit. Everyone loves ranch and caramel! Fruits and veggies are healthy and can easily be prepared in large volumes and leftovers can be enjoyed over the next several days’ meal plan system.
- Dessert: Making a family favorite dessert or two goes a long way to helping (especially children) not be tempted or feel “left out” of having treats. We typically make a 9×13 pan- see our go-to desserts below. Everyone feels satisfied with a sweet treat at the end of the meal!
- If guests offer to bring a dish to pass, say, “yes, please!”. The guests will bring food their family enjoys eating. This helps ensure there will be something everyone likes. You do not have to deviate from your protocol; just fill your plate with compliant foods.
Tips For Attending Social Gatherings While Doing GAPS
- Bring a dish (or 2) to pass that you and your family will enjoy eating and feel satisfied with. We have 6 children, and it is typical for us to bring a large veggie tray, large fruit tray, and a dessert as a contribution. The host appreciates this, and I know our kids can get by for several hours on a hearty helping of fruit, veggies, and filling dessert.
- Eat before the event. When we are unsure what will be served or it is not appropriate to bring a dish to pass, we will make sure we are full before the event. While I no longer feel socially awkward for not eating, I definitely used to! I have found the kids typically run and play and adults can hold a beverage while socializing to “blend in”.
- Accept food with thanksgiving and appreciation. Save it for “later”. Well-meaning adults verrrrrry often seem to offer children sugary, dye-filled, unhealthy candy and treats. We (and our children) say, “thank you for thinking of us.” Or “thank you for your generosity.” Our kids take candy home to make a slew of science experiments with, or we trade them for a healthier treat option. I am also offered food often where I volunteer. If it is a gift from a child or adult, I always say thank you and accept it without intention of eating it later. If it is not a gift or offensive to decline, I will say, “thank you, I am full but I appreciate your offer.”
