GAPS, Paleo, Whole30, Weston Price Meal Ideas
Unsure what to eat and not eat for healing? Enjoy these delicious meals by combining the best ideas from each protocol! Learn what GAPS, Paleo, Whole30, Weston Price Meal Ideas and protocols have in common and how making simple meal swaps could change your life.

GAPS, Paleo, Whole30, Weston Price, Carnivore…
What do GAPS, Paleo, Weston Price, Carnivore and other “trending” diets have in common? While many people may consider these diets trendy, they are actually traditional/ancestral ways of eating. Each of these styles of eating:
- Seeks to re-balance and re-store the body’s health.
- Eliminates processed foods and focuses on whole foods like meat and eggs (from healthy, pastured animals), fermented veggies, and healing animal fats.
- Emphasizes healing, following hunger cues, and noticing when our bodies feel well or unwell after eating certain foods. (As opposed to other diets that count calories, focus on weight loss, or are passive/convenient for time savings or cravings).
- By adding in the healing foods and removing the processed foods, many people can rapidly bring down inflammation and heal from allergies and autoimmune conditions.
- Can be used as a shorter-term reset to restore health. Many people strictly follow one of these protocols for a period of time, and then gradually re-introduce more foods. Our family followed the GAPS protocol very strictly until we had major health improvements. Several years later, a good majority of what we eat is still “GAPS”, because the foods are delicious, healthy, and make us feel well.
What Foods to Buy on GAPS, Whole30, Paleo, Carnivore
Healthy eating and motherhood can be better, easier, and more fun with simple systems in place! One of these systems is having a good list of meal ideas and a well-stocked pantry and fridge. Check out the kitchen tools and items that have made our GAPS journey easier here.
Fridge and Freezer Staples
A few staples in the fridge and freezer can make whipping up a meal much faster and less daunting. Ingredients that are really helpful for our family to have on hand for quick GAPS meals are:
- plenty of cuts of healthy, pasture-raised meats or wild game, such as chicken, beef, pork, venison, turkey, etc.
- eggs
- butter
- raw milk
- kefir grains
- frozen fruit (to blend into kefir smoothies)
- fresh fruit
- fresh veggies such as cabbage, carrots, cucumbers, lettuce
- cooking fats, such as
Seasonings and Sweeteners
A note if you are following GAPS: stick to honey (rather than maple syrup) as a sweetener. Neither honey or maple syrup or compliant for Whole30. You can use a fresh squeezed juice of an orange or blended dates /dried fruits for sweetener options. Carnivore does not generally include sweeteners.
- raw honey
- real vanilla extract
- high mineral salt
- ground ginger
- organic cinnamon
- organic cloves
- parsley flakes
- organic garlic granules
- organic onion granules

Again, each of these healing protocols have variations but they all focus on restoration of the digestive system and healing the whole body. If you are following one of these specific protocols, use these recipes as inspiration and make slight modifications where necessary. All of these recipes are completely GAPS compliant and can easily be modified to be Paleo (dairy-free) by substituting a fat. They can be made Whole30 compliant by omitting a sweetener or substituting fresh pressed fruit juice or dried fruit in place of honey.
Nourishing Meal Ideas:
- Scrambled eggs with fermented veggies, such as fermented carrots or dilly beans
- Deviled eggs (use homemade mayo or this store bought brand) with a side of raw or steamed veggies
- Egg salad in lettuce or cabbage wraps
- Kefir artichoke dip served over leftover meat, such as chicken or roast or mashed “potatoes”. Our kids also enjoy dipping their veggie sticks in it.
- Savory cauliflower cheese and meat pizza
- Gluten-free lentil bread
- Leftover or fresh hamburger patties (or any leftover meat) with healthy ranch dip. We pair this with a sweet item listed above or a second savory dish.
- Chicken soup (or just the broth)
- Spaghetti sauce over ground beef is hearty, comforting, and packed with healthy veggies and protein. We use this sauce as a base to many meals, such as traditional spaghetti sauce, lasagna, cabbage “pizza”, and as a dipping sauce.
- Pumpkin Pie Smoothies (omit sweetener for Whole30 and carnivore)
- Baked Chicken with Homemade Mayo
- Fermented Milk Kefir or Kefir Smoothies
- Nourishing Apple Crisp
- Intro Pumpkin Pancakes
